TRISTRAM, Henry Baker. The Great Sahara: Wanderings South of the Atlas Mountains. London, John Murray, 1860.
8vo. Original maroon cloth, restored with original spine, lettered in gilt, laid down, endpapers renewed; pp. xiv, [2], 435; numerous wood-engravings including 11 full-page, 2 folding maps (one with repairs); internally a very good copy.
First edition. When Tristram visited Algiers for health reasons, the improvement in his condition allowed him the opportunity to travel further south, into the "Great Sahara". In the company of his friend James Peed (who illustrated the book), Tristram explored the northern and already well-known portion of the desert, but also continued further south. The Great Sahara offers one of the earlier European accounts of this region.
