OMAN, Charles. A History of the Peninsular War. Oxford, Clarendon Press, [vol. VII AMS],1902-1980.
Seven volumes, 8vo. Original cloth, lettered in gilt, frontispieces, highly illustrated with maps, plans and facsimiles; from University College Library of South Wales and Monmouthshire with their stamps, shelfmark labels removed from spines.
First edition of volumes one to six, reprint of volume seven. This is the very rare and most comprehensive study in the English language of this bloody episode in Spanish history, which shaped the conflicts to come in the latter 19th and 20th century. Spain proved to be not as easy to conquer for Napoleon's troops as other parts of Europe. This monumental work, rarely seen complete, 'conveys a great sense of clarity and completeness, notably by its full account of the Spanish operations, which had been skimmed over by Napier, and by its innovative compilation of statistics for manpower and casualties' (ODNB).
