First edition in French, after the Latin edition of 1668. Freiherr Augustin Mayer von Mayerberg (1612-1688) was a German diplomat in the servie of Emperor Leopold. In this book he describes the mission to Moscow in 1661 and 1662 in connection with a Polish-Russian peace treatise. Mayerberg unravelles the complex geoplitics of Eastern Europe after the 1648 uprising of the Zaporozhian Cossacks under Bohdan Khmelnytsky against Polish rule, the beginning of the slow demise of the Polish Commonwealth
