CUNLIFFE-OWEN, Betty. Silhouettes of Republican Greece (Romances and Refugees). London, Hutchinson, [1927].
8vo. Original cloth, spine ruled and lettered in gilt; pp. 278, sketch map and pates after photographs, covers with minimal bubbling, light offsetting from endpapers, previous bookdealer's pencil annotations to endpapers, a very good copy.
Very uncommon first edition. With a foreword by Henry Morgenthau, this book reports of the tumultuous establishment of the Second Hellenic Republic in 1924, combined with observations of the refugee crisis in Macedonaia, and that of Greeks being expelled from Asia Minor. Morgenthau judged 'the author has written with both charm and empathy of the great problem of the refugees, around whose tragic lives she has woven romance and colour … I can commend this volume' (p. 9). One long section of the book is devoted to Corfu.
