Sumo and Samurai

Sotheran's are very pleased to present you with our latest exhibition catalogue featuring Sumo & Samurai Japanese woodblock prints together. The age of the samurai brought a new dimension to sumo. Physical strength was paramount for warriors, and samurai families often employed sumo wrestlers. During the Warring States period, samurai liked to relax by wrestling.

Sumo was a pastime that was encouraged because it was not expensive and was a good way to train the body.

The exhibition will be on view in the Print room at Sotheran's, 1st Floor, 22 Charing Cross Road from 17th October – 7th November 2025. We hope you will have the chance to view these impressive prints in person. All prints are mounted or framed (when stated) and available for purchase either in person or via website. Our exhibition will coincide with the Sumo tournament taking place at the Royal Albert Hall from 15th – 19th October 2025.
