LIPOVETZKY, P. Joseph Trumpeldor. Life and Works. Jerusalem, Youth and Hechalutz Department, World Zionist Organization, 1953.

8vo. Original cloth-backed illustrated boards, illustrated endpapers; pp. 102, [2], two leaves of plates; wear to one corner, binding a little marked, light spotting to endpapers; otherwise very good; contemporary Johannesburg Jewish bookderaler's stamps to paste-downs.
Very rare first edition. This is the biography of one of the most revered early Zionists, soldier and activist. In his only forty year short life he had attended the first Zionist Congress as a teenager, served on Russia's Eastern front, organized the Zion Mule Corps in 1915, which saw action at Gallipoli, organized the Petrograd Jewish soldiers' association, and self-defense units. He died after a battle with Arabs in Israel in 1920. 'March 1915 saw the formation of the Zion Mule Corps (as a unit in the British Army), the first independent Jewish fighting force to take an active part in a war since the destruction of the Temple by the Romans 2,000 years ago. It marks a momentous point in Jewish history; many of the men involved later formed what was to become the core of the modern Israeli army' (Martin Sugarman, The Zion Muleteers of Gallipoli, online).
OCLC locates only two copies, at University of Southampton, and in the British Library.
