GILLES, Pierre. De Constantinopoleos topographia lib. IV. Amsterdam: Elzevier, 1632.
12mo. Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in ink; pp. 428, [4, blank], title-page beautifully engraved; binding a little dusted and darkened, internally, apart from light even browning one leaf with marginal paperflaw, just touching a few letters, a very good copy in a contemporary binding with contemporary hand-written title label tipped in onto inside of lower cover, to be folded over edge to be legible when the book is stored flat.
First Elzevier edition, first issue. First published in Lyon, 1561, this is Gilles' work on the topography of 16th-century Istanbul. 'He had accompanied d'Aramon's embassy to the Porte in 1547 and travelled in Asia Minor with Andre Thevet' (Atabey 495 on Gilles' De Bosporo).
See Blackmer 687 and Atabey 497 (both second issue).
