OSWALD, Alice. Dart. London: Faber and Faber. 2002.

8vo. Paperback original; publisher’s turquoise wrappers with integral flaps, lettered in green and blue to front panel; pp. [viii], 48, [8]; signed by the author in blue ink beneath the epigraph [p. v]; a fine copy.

A fine, signed first edition, first printing of Alice Oswald’s T. S. Eliot prize-winning poem recording the life of, and around, the great Devon River.

Over a period of two years, Alice Oswald recorded a series of conversations with people living and working on and around the River Dart. The voices of poacher, ferryman, sewage worker, forester, swimmers and canoeists, as well as historic and mythical figures fuse to create a narrative of the river from source to sea. The poem, like the eponymous river, gathers force as it progresses, with sporadic commentaries, like quieter tributaries, appearing in the margins.
