First appearance of Kafka's nightmare in English
KAFKA, Franz. The Metamorphosis. London: The Parton Press. 1937.
8vo. Blue cloth-backed black paper-covered boards, blue label to front; pp. 74; a little spotting to fore-edges, very good.
First English language edition.
Translated by A. L. Lloyd. A well presented copy of Kafka's modernist and existentialist work which helped establish the nightmarish and bizarre Kafkaesque style, reflecting the oppressive and incomprehensible nature of bureaucratic and societal systems. Gregor Samsa's transformation into a giant insect is probably the author's most famous tale, first published in 1915. It is a wonder that it took so long to be translated into English.
