Behind the mirror

CHAGALL, Marc (illustrator); IMPRIMERIE MODERNE DU LION (text). Derriere Le Miroir. Paris: Maeght Editeur. 1979.

Folio, pp. 32, text in French "Chagall vu par Vercors", illustrated with two colour lithographs by Chagall, one to cover and one to pages 4-5 which is double-paged, unbound as issued, otherwise fine.

Iconic Russian artist, Marc Chagall, is credited with the creation of some of the most powerful examples of colour lithography. Pablo Picasso is thought to have once declared of his contemporary's supernatural flair, "I don’t know where he gets those images from; he must have an angel in his head". His fantastical work, many of which contain elements of Jewish tradition, had an immense influence on European Art in the 20th century. His practices were as varied as such; he was responsible for stained-glass windows, ceramics and printmaking to name but a few remarkable skillsets and avant-garde movements from Cubism and, later, Surrealism were affected by his legacy. Chagall produced stained-glass windows for the United Nations building in New York City and Hadassah University Medical Centre’s Abbell Synagogue in Jerusalem as well as other influential global markers.

Derriere Le Miroir ('Behind the Mirror') was a Parisian Art Magazine established in 1946 and published until 1982. It was founded by Aime Maeght who established the Foundation Maeght with his wife Marguerite in the South of France, a privately funded museum devoted to 20th century art. Foundation Maeght still showcases over 12,000 pieces of art to this day.
