First of this paperback edition, signed and dated by Julian Assange at the Embassy of Ecuador in October 2016.
Julian Assange, founder and editor of the leaked documents publishing company Wikileaks, rose to fame in 2010 when he made the decision to publish a series of leaks from US Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, along with footage of a US airstrike in Baghdad, US military logs from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, and 251,287 top-secret State Department cables. In November of the same year, Sweden issued a European arrest warrant against Assange, and after his appeal was rejected he breached bail, taking refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London between 2012 and 2019.
Born and raised in Australia, Assange had previously been convicted for hacking in 1996, and in 2008 was subject to a lawsuit by the private banking corporation Bank Julius Baer. After he was granted asylum by Ecuador he went on to stand for the Australian Senate in 2013 and launched the Wikileaks party, but failed to win a seat. In 2019, after a series of disputes with the Ecuadorian authorities, Assange's asylym was withdrawn, and he was subsequently found guilty of breaching the bail act. He spent 50 weeks in prison. At the same time, the U.S. government unsealed a series of indictments, along with the violation of the Espionage Act 1917 and allegations that he had conspired with hackers. He remains incarcerated at HM Prison Belmarsh.
The Wikileaks File presents expert analysis on the most important cables exposed during the leaks, and outlines their historical importance. With an instroduction provided by Assange, the chapters are divided by region, and include chapters by Dan Beeton, Phyllis Bennis, Michael Busch, Peter Certo and many others.
