Exceedingly rare in fine dustwrapper
KEYNES, John Maynard. The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money. London: Macmillan and Co. 1936.
8vo. Original dark green cloth, spine blocked in gilt, in original printed dustwrapper; pp. [i, advert.], xii, 403; fine in fine dustwrapper. Provenance: ffep with pencil signature of F.R. Cowell (1897-1978), British historian and author.
First edition of the author's greatest and most influential work. Extremely rare in such fine condition. Written in the aftermath of the Great Depression with the recognition that the old world order had to change, this book revolutionised the approach to unemployment and became the major framework in the formation of the Welfare State. It permanently altered the role of government in society and introduced a system of controlled capitalism that underpinned Western economies in the decades following the Second World War. It is probably the most significant work of social science of the twentieth century.
