The three interconnected detective stories published here published together as The New York Trilogy are the works that made Auster's name. City of Glass (1985), is the story of a private investigator who descends into madness. Ghosts, published the following year, follows a private eye immersed in the life of the man he is investigating. The Locked Room portrays a writer in a creative slump, taking its title from the 'Locked Room' mysteries of early detective fiction.
