MENPES, Dorothy (text). Mortimer MENPES (illustrator). World's Children. London, Adam & Charles Black, 1903.

Large 8vo.; publisher's light blue decorative cloth prettily blocked in sage and olive green and gilt, to spine and upper cover, lettered gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed; pp. x, [1]-246 + [10] publisher's pictorial catalogue on coated stock; with a total of 100 coloured plates protected by captioned tissue-guards; a very good and attractive copy with some toning and fading to spine and a couple of minor marks to lower cover; internally fresh throughout save toning to endpapers, without ownership inscription; a rather elusive title.
First edition, one of only 3200 copies. A charming book looking at the condition of the child in a wide range of countries around the world. A pupil of J. M. Whistler and contemporary of Edward Poynter, Mortimer Menpes was a prominent artist during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An ethnographic review of the 'types' of children across the globe World's Children was illustrated by Menpes and written by his daughter Dorothy. This title was a great success for A. & C. Black, as it was reprinted in 1904 and 1905 with changes to the colour scheme of the binding. Inman 90.
