TROCCHI, Alexander Young Adam. London: The New English Library Limited. 1966.

Small format 8vo., original green card covers, ruled and lettered in black and white; pp. [vi], 7-160; near-fine, covers a little rubbed and creased, the odd mark but otherwise clean and retaining its original colour; a couple of small dark stains to the fore-edge.

First edition thus. No. 109 in the Olympia Press Traveller’s Companion Series. These editions were published simultaneously with the Paris Olympia Press in London and New York, following a series of censorship battles.

Young Adam was published in the UK in 1961, making it the first of the author’s novels to appear in his home country. His first novel, Cain’s Book, had previously been banned, and most of Trocchi’s output, pornographic in nature, had been published by the Olympia Press, usually under the pen names Frances Lengel and Carmencita de las Lunas. The present title involves the skipper of a boat and his drifter, who discover a woman’s corpse floating in the River Clyde. Trocchi himself was born and raised in Glasgow, although he felt little affection for his own country, and lived for long stretches in Paris and New York.

Not in Kearney (which runs up to No. 94)
