Small format 8vo., original green card covers, ruled and lettered in black and white; together in the original card dustwrapper, printed in pastel shades of purple, pink and yellow, with illustrations by Jacqueline Duhème; pp. [vi], 7-219, [v]; title border in green and complete with numerous illustrations throughout the text in line by Duhème; the book essentially fine, with only very minor rubbing, a couple of small dark marks to the outer edge, and pencil markings to ffep; the wrapper also near-fine, one tiny blue mark to foot of spine; a wonderful copy.
First English edition, translated from the French by Eric Kahane and Akbar del Piombo [Norman Rubington]. No. 74 in the Traveller’s Companion Series. Printed in September 1959 by Impr. Georges Frère and priced 1.200 Francs.
Advertised in some Olympia Press catalogues as ‘Zazie or the Sex of Angels’, the book, which sees the protagonist in a series of adventures in the French capital city, was Queneau’s first major success, and was later adapted into a hugely successful film starring Catherine Demongeot as Zazie and Philippe Noiret as Gabriel.
