BURROUGHS, William; Brion GYSIN. The Third Mind. New York: The Viking Press, 1978.

8vo., navy-blue cloth-backed boards, spine lettered in silver; unclipped dust wrapper with photograph to upper panel by Mayotte Magnus; photo to lower by Francois Lagarde showing Gysin and Burroughs beneath a statue of Martin Luther; pp. [x], 194, [iv]; lightly pushed, and faint offsetting to paste-downs; jacket flaps a touch toned; a near-fine copy.
First english edition, signed by Burroughs to the title page with and additional inscription underneath. The Third Mind had been published the previous year in a French-language edition and some chapters had previously been published, in a slightly different form, in various literary journals between 1960 and 1973.
A combination of essays by both Burroughs and Gysin in which the painter and writer together explore, document and illustrate their pioneering 'cut up' technique.
