Winner of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and shortlisted for the Booker Prize, although a work of fiction, Empire of the Sun takes great inspiration from Ballards own experience during WWII. As Ballard writes in his introductory note, "Empire of the Sun draws on my experiences in Shanghai, China, and in Lunghua C.A.C. (Civilian Assembly Centry) where I was interred from 1942-45. For the most part this novel is based on events I observed during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai and within the camp at Lunghua".
Steven Spielberg directed the 1987 film, which starred Christian Bale, John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson, and Nigel Havers and which was nominated for six Oscars. The film tells the story of Jamie "Jim" Graham, a young boy who goes from living in a wealthy British family in Shanghai, to becoming a prisoner of war in Lunghua Civilian Assembly Center, a Japanese internment camp, during World War II.
