Small format 8vo., original green card covers, ruled and lettered in black and white; pp. [vi], 7-204, [iv]; two title pages with border in green; a couple of bleached marks to front cover; price cancelled with blue biro to lower; a little rubbed along edges and spine, the latter
with some additional creasing; near-fine, internally, a couple of very light corner creases.
First edition thus, no. 70 in the Traveller’s Companion Series, printed May 1959 by S. I. P. Montreuil, France and sold for 1.500 francs. The reissue was priced 18 N.F. The books had previously been published by the Olympia Press in two distinct volumes in 1953.
Known predominantly for his poetry, Apollinaire’s two erotic novels were praised by Picasso as being his true masterpieces. “The rutting is non-stop” the Times Literary Supplement later commented. “Who else would have turned a twosome into a foursome by the arrival of two randy burglars?”
