Just Kids is a beauitful, evocative account of Smith's relationship with the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe but also a memoir of New York city during the late sixties and seventies what with its poetic account of the community of artists with whom they found themselves so famously affiliated.
Just Kids was winner of the 2010 Non-Fiction National Book Award and remains one of the most engaging elegies to a certain generation and to a time before two aspiring artists both became world renown.
