MURRAY, Margaret Alice. The Witch-Cult in Western Europe. Oxford: The Clarendon Press. 1921.

8vo. Original cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pp. 303; light wear to extremities, a little scuffing to one corner, occasional light spotting internally; a very good copy of an uncommon title.

First edition of a still debated and controversial book by the pioneering female Egyptologist, archaeologist, anthropologist, historian, folklorist and women's rights activist. Margaret Murray (1863-1963) was the first woman to be appointed as a university lecturer in archaeology in the United Kingdom. In this book she studied records of Western European witch trials and arrived at the theory that witch cults did actually exist as a pre-Christian female belief system and practice. However academically criticized, this book exerted a far-reaching influence on New Age, modern Paganism and feminist movements all over the world.
