ANON. Skiers fly Swiss Air, the holiday route to the Alps.
Original luggage label, c.1950. 75 x 240 mm.
Swissair was founded in 1931 and by 1936 London had been added to the route network. By 1949 England made up 40% of Swissairs revenue. Skiing in Switzerland had always been a popular sport for the well off.
The Swiss ski association was founded in 1904 when skiing quickly took hold in resorts such as St. Moritz, Gstaad and Davos. After the second World War Swissair realised its customer base had changed and they now had to appeal to a wider audience. Promotional and advertsing campaigns soon followed.
30% of Swissair was owned by Swiss Federal railways, who they worked closely with. The aircraft depicted in this label is a Douglas DC6B.
