The hotel was originally established in 1846 as Richards Hotel and restaurant on the Bund (waterfront area and a protected historical district in central Shanghai).
The hotel was renamed in 1859. By 1890 the hotel had expanded and with massive refurbishment it became the place of social activity in Shanghai. The Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotel company bought the hotel in 1923.
