First edition with foreword by Anthony Burgess (a talented linguist), who pointed out how India was rum by British amateurs. He remarked that 'no professional dictionary ever told us so much about the impact of the languages of India upon English' (p. vii). The book had appeared first in 1886, and the 1903 version edited by William Cooke was highly acclaimed, and appreciated (and consulted) by Rudyard Kipling. The present edition is a facsimile of the 1903 edition with the new preface.
