XENOPHON. The Ascent of Cyrus the Younger: and the Retreat of the Ten Thousand Greeks. Translated from Xenophon, by John Hawkey, A.B. Dublin, printed by George Faulkner, 1738.
8vo. 20th-century library buckram made for Southwark Public Libraries (previously in Stoke Newington Public Libraries); pp. xxvi (leaf B2 misbound after B3), 312, beautiful woodcut head- and tailpieces; library (and withdrawal) stamps in the usual places, a few gatherings a little toned, otherwise a very good copy of a beautifully typeset book.
Very rare first edition of this new translation. John Hawkey was a Devon-born classical scholar who had studied and resided in Dublin. The book is beautifully printed, almost reminiscent of the work of Strawberry Hill Press. Swift, whose works were printed by George Faulkner called him in a letter 'the Prince of Dublin Printers' (ODNB).
ESTC N15948; COPAC locates copies at St. Andrews, Oxford and in the Wellcome only; there is a copy in the National Library of Ireland. We were not able to trace any other copy in the trade or in book auction records.
