Revised edition with 'new matter' printed nine months after the first printing of this social and political assessment of the Philippines under US occupation, written by the Amercian authority on the Philippines. Worcester, who in 1898 had become a high-ranking civil servant in the new territory, took a keen interest in the 'exotic' inhabitants of the archipelago, and developed his own business interests in the Philippines.
