WOLFF, Otto. Ouvrard. Speculator of Genius. Barrie and Rockliff, 1962.
8vo, original boards, in dust-jacket; a very good copy.
First UK edition. Gabriel Julien Ouvrard played a spectacular part in the finances of France from the Revolution to the reign of Louis XVIII, financing governments and building and losing financial empires through speculation. One of his greatest triumphs was so reducing French war debts as to cut short the allied occupation after Waterloo, yet he was almost unknown. This book was an attempt to address this anonymity.
