Publisher’s quarter dark orange cloth over bright orange paper-covered boards, spine lettered in black, in the illustrated dust-jacket Barry Zaid with printed price $4.95; pp. 220; very minor toning to jacket spine, slight pushing to spine ends; near fine.

Archive: ff. This working title also appears on the Simon & Schuster editorial department report, where it has been corrected in black ink to No Nudes is Good Nudes. Schwed evidently shared Meredith’s enthusiasm, initialling the report and adding: ‘One of the best! Let’s Go!’

The title change is particularly amusing in light of Wodehouse’s own views on nudity. Writing to his friend and fellow author Denis Mackail in 1945 about ‘the subject of the Nude on stage’, Wodehouse described his new workroom in Paris as ‘very good’, but complained of one ‘drawback, which can be easily remedied by taking the dam thing down […] is an enormous picture of a nude […] I have already expressed to you my views on nudes, I want no piece of them.’ (Ratcliffe, pp. 372–73)

The accompanying material includes two photocopied pages from Simon & Schuster’s internal files. One observes that ‘anyone who works for Simon & Schuster and doesn’t know about P.G. Wodehouse by this time had better go into the data-computing business’ and provides a brief synopsis of the novel; the other outlines the copy-writing intended for the dust-jacket flaps. There is also a photocopy of a review by Peter S. Prescott, who often reviewed Wodehouse’s work, and two carbon copies of letters written to Wodehouse. In one, Schwed suggests that Wodehouse read a complimentary review about his writing; the other, from Schwed’s secretary, remarks that ‘one of the nicer things about working with Peter has been exposure to P.G. Wodehouse’.

Mcllvaine A92b. See Ratcliffe ed., P.G.
