TOY, Barbara. A Fool Strikes Oil. Across Saudi Arabia. London, Murray, 1957.
8vo. Original blue boards, spine titled in white; pp. xii, 207; photographic plates, sketch map; unread and near fine, the best copy we ever handled.
First edition, scarce. In her car journey through the peninsula, starting in Kuwait and ending in Jeddah via Mecca, Barbara Toy, the Australian writer, traveller and playwright was granted to visit Saudi Arabia, and was one of the first Western women to talk to the King's harem. She drove her legendary 1950 Land Rover Polyanna, a motorcar still running and looked after. - A vivid and personal travelogue by an independent woman of a region now less accessible than 60 years ago and quite rare.
