Original buff cloth, upper board blocked with image of Nile scene in colours and lettered in gilt, spine blocked with image of temple in colours and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt; pp. xv, 282, [10, advertisements]; colour-printed frontispiece and 59 colour-printed plates, each with captioned tissue-guard, folding plan of Cairo bound to throw-clear, folding map of Egypt bound to throw-clear; a few small marks, spine slightly darkened, variable light spotting, otherwise a good, sound copy.
First and only edition, the issue without gilt top edge. One of 3,000 copies. The text by Professor John Todd describes the history, culture, and topography of Egypt, based on his residence in the country. The three appendices are: "Brief Chronology of Egypt"; "Note on the Pronunciation of Arabic"; "Etymology of Arabic Place Names".
