THORLEY, John. Melisselogia or The Female Monarchy. Being an enquiry into the nature, order and government of bees, those admirable, instructive and useful insects. Printed for the author. 1744.
8vo. Contemporary full calf boards with gilt double fillets, sometime sympathetically rebacked and corners repaired, spine with gilt raised bands and red morocco gilt lettering piece; pp. xlvi + 206 + [2, explanation of plates], frontispiece and four plates; occasional browning, very good.
First edition. This book became the standard work on apiculture for much of the eighteenth century. Reverend Thorley identified a number of key bee characteristics and used them as a moral guide for his readers, especially emphasising their loyalty to the Queen as a way of exhorting his readers to support the monarchy against the Jacobite threat.
