Portrait depicting Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, colonial governor and founder of Singapore. 'A man of vision with great ambitions for himself and his country, he saw Britain's mission to raise the people of the eastern archipelago from ignorance and poverty, not by means of territorial expansion, but a combination of commercial and moral pre-eminance. Raffles's most enduring monument was Singapore itslef, which secured British supremacy in the eastern seas for more than a centruy and represented a triumph for the principles of free trade and laissez-faire' (ODNB).
