GRAHAME, Kenneth (author). E.H. SHEPARD (illustrator). The Wind in the Willows. London, Methuen & Co. Ltd. [1931].

4to. Original grass-green buckram-backed grey boards, with white paper lettering-label to spine, protected by cream textured dustwrapper printed in dark blue, top edges rough, uncut and unopened, in custom-made forest-green cloth covered slipcase lined with grey ; pp. [vi] + 312 + large folding pictorial map at rear and spare printed lettering-label, as issued; illustrated throughout with beautiful crisp impressions of the original drawings by Shepard; printed on fine mould-made paper, with luxurious wide margins; a wonderful copy in collector's condition, both externally and internally very near fine, with slight toning and a couple of tiny spots to top edge of book block, internally pristine and uninscribed, in a remarkably nice example of the scarce, unclipped dustwrapper (42/-) with overall light dust-soiling, one small brown spot to upper panel (5mm diameter), some tanning to spine, rubbing to fore-edge folds and small nicking to spine ends and corners.

First edition illustrated by E.H. Shepard. De luxe edition, LIMITED TO ONLY 200 NUMBERED COPIES, OF WHICH THIS IS 11, SIGNED BY BOTH KENNETH GRAHAME AND E.H. SHEPARD. This has to be the most popular illustrated edition of the classic book. Shepard's drawings have not been improved upon and certainly outshine those of the illustrators who preceded him in their treatment of the work. The limited edition enjoys very fine production making the book a joy to read and handle, and the illustrations capture the incision of fresh engravings, with a clarity that greatly excedes the trade edition. This unopened copy is a virgin example for the collector.
