SWIFT, Jonathan. Directions to Servants. London: Golden Cockerel Press, 1925.

Large 8vo., original vellum-backed green paste-paper boards lettered in gilt to spine; with 12 wood engravings by John Nash; Golden Cockerel device to colophon; pp. [viii], 35, [v]; internally near-fine, with just the odd spot serving as defect; binding shelf worn and rubbed, some darkening to edges and spine, with some small stains and scratches, some wear to edges, one or two very tiny patches showing through to the boards; still very good. Provenance: Book plate of V. M. Reynolds to the front paste-down.
First edition with Nash illustrations, limited to 380 numbered copies of which this is copy no. 212.
'This essay, begun in 1731, was still unfinished at the time of Swift's death fourteen years later'. A satirical and humorous essay which offers 'advice' verging on the absurd - advice which, if followed, epitomises exactly what not to do in any given situation.
