SUYEMATSU, Baron Kenchio. The Risen Sun. London, Constable, 1905.
8vo. Publisher's original green cloth, image of landscape with Mount blocked in black and gilt to upper cover, lettered in gilt and black to spine; pp. ix, 355; a little rubbed and darkened, but in general a good copy.
First British edition, presentation copy. The author, a one time Japanese politician, left Yokohama for the United States shortly before the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese war. While there, he was asked by various newspapers for his views on the war, also contributing articles on other aspects of Japan and her international relations. These articles are collected in the present publication.
This volume was presented to William St John Fremantle Brodrick, 1st Earl of Midleton (ownership inscription), Secretary of State for War, 1900–1903, who was very involved in diplomatic relations with Russia during the build-up to the Russo-Japanese War, which features heavily in this book.
