SICILY. Copper-engraved map after William Hole's version of 1614, from an edition of Sir Walter Raleigh's History of the World [first, 1614]. London, T. Basset, 1687.
Image size 30 by 38 cm; vertical fold in the middle; well-preserved. Raleigh's successful but unfinished history ends with the year 130BC. This map illustrates the battle of Syracuse in 414BC, between the Athenians under Nikias and the Spartans, another exhausting and undecided battle during the Peloponnesian War.
