The Far Country is a love story of two people from different countries, working together through hardships to build a life of prosperity. It was written in the same year that Shute emigrated to Australia, and behind the blossoming romantic plot-line, the author takes a thinly-veiled swipe at the British National Health Service, as well as the socialist Labour government, themes he would later develop more fully in In the Wet.
