SHARPE, Gregory. The Origin and Structure of the Greek Tongue, in a Series of Letters addressed to a young Nobleman. London, Richardson and Clark for W. Sandby, 1767.

8vo. Near contemporary full speckled calf with raised bands, covers with gilt double-fillets; pp. 238. [2, errata and advertisements]; extremities a little rubbed, hinges weakened, light browning in places, a good copy.
First edition. Sharpe was a clergyman with a keen interest in teaching and learning languages, as well as the publisher of John Locke's Observations upon the Growth and Culture of Vines and Olives, from the original manuscript. This course of Classical Greek in the form of educational letters is quite remarkable as the author links Greek to old semitic languages and writing systems, such as Samaritan. Indeed, the author was not only a philologist and antiquarian, but a keen Orientalist as well.
