Severin's account of his 1993 attempt to cross the Pacific on the bamboo raft Hsu Fu, to test the hypothesis that Asian raft sailors reached North America some 2,000 years previously; departing from Hong Kong, travelling past Taiwan to Japan, and then across the Pacific towards America, the expedition covered some 5,500 miles before damage to the raft forced the crew to abandon it.
