He was appointed tutor to Crown Prince Alexander of Saxony – son of Elector August of Saxony – in 1564, resigning after having criticised the Elector’s passion for hunting. By 1573, he had become an outspoken opponent of the Philippists (named for Melanchthon), who leaned toward a more spiritual or symbolic interpretation of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. The first Latin edition (1576) had appeared in the same year as the first German edition, \u003ci\u003eChristliche wahrhaftige Widerlegung und Ableinung der vornehmsten ungegründeten Auflagen\u003c\/i\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBoth of these, as well as the present edition, are dedicated to Joachim Ernst, Prince of Anhalt (1536–1586), who had been involved with August, Elector of Saxony in the calling of a convention of theologians at Torgau in 1574, resulting in the creation of the Torgau Book, a series of articles intended to peacefully resolve debates amongst German Lutherans. Selnecker was directly involved in the revision of the book at the behest of Elector August, along with Martin Chemnitz and Reformer Jakob Andreae. The Book of Torgau was the direct predecessor to the final \u003ci\u003eBook of Concord\u003c\/i\u003e (1577), in which Selnecker was also directly involved.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is likely for this reason that Selnecker produced an adapted dedication to Ernst for this edition, dated Leipzig, July 1578 as opposed to Dresden, 27 November 1575. The \u003ci\u003eConfutatio\u003c\/i\u003e comprises a point-by-point refutation of twenty-nine Sacramentarian arguments pertaining to the Lord’s Supper. This edition contains, seemingly for the first time, a concise argument against Beza on Christ’s bodily presence, a condensed and revised version of his 1571 \u003ci\u003eAd D. Theodori Bezae calumnias\u003c\/i\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNUSK attributes the panels to the front board – depicting Faith, Hope, Charity, and Patience – and to the rear board – depicting Justice, Prudence, Fortitude, and Temperance – to Bookbinder with German Tools VII, active in the present-day Czech Republic (likely Moravia) between 1571 and 1588 and sometimes signed ‘HS’ (NUSK 80, cf. Haebler, pp. 411–12). After the binder’s death, several of his tools were used in the court of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II (Rudolf I, King of Hungary and Croatia, r. 1572–1608); this binding, with the stamp to the upper board signed ‘MR’, was likely produced in present-day Hungary or Slovakia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ci\u003eProvenance\u003c\/i\u003e:\u003cbr\u003e1.  1609 ownership inscription of ‘Joannis Wochii’ (\u003ci\u003ei.e.\u003c\/i\u003e Wochius or Wocher?), in Basel (first page of dedication inscribed in the same hand), with occasional underlining, manicules, and annotations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2.
