SALLUST [Gaius Sallustus Crispus]. C. Sallustius Crispus, cum veterum Historicorum fragmentis. Lugduni Batavorum Leiden: Ex Officina Elzeviriana, 1634.

12mo., bound in red morocco with five raised bands gilt direct to spine; all edges gilt, gilt turn-ins and marbled endpapers; woodcut vignette of Sallust facing p.1, and ornament of the head of Medusa on p.216; green ribbon marker; pp. [xxix], 310, [xlii]; a few finger nicks to edges of pages, internally very clean and bright, and few small pen annotations to the rear endpaper; the binding a little rubbed, with some dust soiling to the gilt edges and wear to spine tips and corners; a lovely copy of a charming volume. Provenance: two previous owner's bookplates overlaid to the front paste-down.
Sallust is the earliest known Latin-language Roman historian and politician with surviving works to his name. Of the Histories, only fragments survive, and indeed, within this Elzevir edition, much of the authorship is disputed. The Bellum Catilinae, or War of Catiline, was Sallust's first history, and chronicles the attempted overthrow of the government by the bankrupt aristocrat Catiline in 63 BC. Also included here is an index, along with supplementary information.
