RUSSELL, Michael, Reverend. View of Ancient and Modern Egypt; with an outline of its Natural History. Edinburgh, Oliver & Boyd, 1831.
Small 8vo. Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, spine ornamented in gilt and with gilt-stamped lettereing-piece, marbled endpapers and edges; pp. 480, folding engraved map, additional title with large wood-engraved vignette, nine wood-engraved plates; wear to extremities, occasional spotting internally, a good copy.
Uncommon first edition. The break-away from Ottoman rule under Mohammed Ali had spraked renewed interest in the ancient country, including 19th-century society, economy and customs, hence this concise summary of all worth knowing and known about Egypt. The author was actually the Scottish Episcopal bishop of Glasgow and Galloway, a man with much interest in current affairs and the dissemination of wordly knowledge.
