ROSSETTI, Christina. Verses. London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, 1893.
4to., original black buckram lettered in gilt to spine and upper board; upper edge gilt, else untrimmed; the text block with rubricated borders throughout; pp. [vii], 8-236, [iv, ads]; boards a little rubbed and pushed to head/foot; upper edge a trifle dust-soiled; contemporary ink ownership inscription to ffep, and another to the head of title page; else a lovely bright copy, faintly offset to the endleaves.
First thus. A compilation of devotional poetry taken from earlier publications The Face of the Deep, Time Flies, and Called to be Saints, collected here together in one volume. Each had been published by the same publisher, (SPCK), in years previous.
Despite battling breast cancer at the time of the publication of Verses, Rossetti remained active and was more than happy to “throw my grain of dust into the religious scale”. She passed away just the following year, on 29th December 1894.
