Contemporary half blue calf over marbled boards; spine with raised bands, ornamented in gilt and with two contrasting lettering pieces; speckled edges; pp. lii, [iv], 366; [v]-x, [iv], 447; 8 tinted lithograph plates; 8 maps, 3 of which are folding, additional sectional titles with wood-engraved illustrations above typographic texts; previous owner's bookplates; spines faded; light rubbing to boards; browning to endpapers, with offsetting; light offsetting from maps and plates; small repaired tears in some maps; a good set in the contemporary binding; provenance: David Walton, of Bluntisham Books and a prominent member of the Antarctic community.

'One of the most important works in the history of Antarctic exploration … Ross led this expedition for the purpose of Antarctic Discovery and Magnetic surveys, during which he circumnavigated the Antarctic continent, discovered the Ross Sea, Ross Island, the Ross Shelf Ice, Victoria Land, Erebus and Terror Gulf (named after the ships of the expedition), Mount Erebus, and attempted to penetrate the Weddell Sea' (Hill). Rosove calls the work 'a cornerstone of Antarctic literature and a monument to one of mankind's greatest expeditions of geographical and scientific exploration.'
