The American missionary and president of one of the oldest Western Universities in China, St. John's College in Shanghai (founded in 1879) concludes the volume with the recommendation that the United States 'should strive to play her part so that the result of the present upheaval shall be not merely further land grabbing, or the increase of commerce, but the advancement of Christian civilization in the Far East'.
