PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM Big Game in the British Raj Birmingham: Kalamazoo Ltd. 1939 (dated by hand).

37 x 19 cm. Black leather boards, with 83 photographs, unpublished, large (many 29 x 24 cm) mounted one to a leaf, many captioned in silver ink; boards a little rubbed, very good.
A unique album of striking photographs taken on hunting trips in India between 1929 and 1939, which are as interesting as a record of the last glory days of the British Raj as they are as safari mementoes. There are arresting images of a whole range of Indian game including leopard (including one clearly kept as a pet), tiger, rhino, gharial, bull, wildfowl and deer, both alive and after the hunt. There are also beautiful landscapes of locations such as the Bhagirathi River, Nanda and Harma and portraits of servants, local people and, presumably, the anonymous owner of this album with his dogs. Also on show are contemporary cars and dress.
