Original cloth-backed illustrated boards, spine ornamented in black, lettered in gilt, front cover lettered in gilt; pp. 283, double-page sketch map, vignettes in the text, colour-printed map loosely inserted; edges of covers with wear, apart from offsetting from front fly-leaf to title, internally very good; provenance: withdrawn from a Warsaw public library with stamps on title-verso.
First edition to be compiled and commented by I. A. Margolis, of 19th-century expeditions into the unknown parts of Mongolia and Inner China, missions carried out by Mikhail Pevtsov, a young Russian army officer and pupil of Przevalski, who undertook three journeys between 1876 and 1890 into Kashgaria and with caravans of merchants through the Southern Altai, Mongolia and Gobi Desert to Kalgan and back.
