First edition to be compiled and commented by I. A. Margolis, of 19th-century expeditions into the unknown parts of Mongolia and Inner China, missions carried out by Mikhail Pevtsov, a young Russian army officer and pupil of Przevalski, who undertook three journeys between 1876 and 1890 into Kashgaria and with caravans of merchants through the Southern Altai, Mongolia and Gobi Desert to Kalgan and back.
