PAQUIER. Jean Baptiste. Le Pamir. Étude géographie physique historique. Paris, Maisonneuve et Cie., 1876.

8vo. Original printed wrappers; pp. [2], viii, 218, [2, errata], with five lithographic maps (four double-page and with exploration routes in red, one fold-out), minor marginal chipping to wrappers, maps evenly browned, as usual, due to paper stock, errata leaf with faint marginal trace of humidity; entirely uncut and unopened.
Scarce first edition of a neutral observation of the historical geography of the Pamirs, the Great Game, and a sum of both Russian and British explorations and reconnaissance missions, written by a Paris professor of history and geography, who was supplied with Russian source material by Nicholas de Khanikoff (Khanikov), 'a Russian agent', who 'crossed the Caspian and reached Herat, from where he intended to proceed secretly to Kabul and make overtures on behalf of his government to Dost Mohammed' (Hopkirk, p. 290).
