PAPINEAU, Arisitde J. G. [editor]. Guide to Singapore and Spotlight on Malaya … 9th edition. Singapore, Craftsman Press Ltd for Papineau Studios, [c. 1955].
8vo, Original colour-illustrated card wrappers; pp. 200, [xlvi, index on green paper], four maps (three folding, one very large, 74 x 100 cm, a few maps in the text, printed in yellow and black, highly illustrated, occasionally in colour, numerous advertisements, the edges of the wrappers due to their size (larger that the book block) a little frayed, as usual, light wear to head and tail of spine, ownership inscriptions to endpapers, a very good copy.
A rare survival of the humid climate, very informative and stylish. The part on Malaya is mostly occupied with the Communist insurrection, which threatened Singapore as well. The worst seems to be over: 'The tide has definitely turned. And, arm-in-arm with the battle againstmilitant Communism, had gone the battle for "hearts and minds"of the peoples of the Federation of Malaya' (p. 196).
