First edition. Sir Herbert Richmond Palmer served as a Lieutenant Governor in Nigeria and worked in Bornu and Kano provinces mainly through local rulers and acquired in the course of 24 years many MSS in the 'Western Sudan'. The present translations include two collected by the traveller Heinrich Barth in 1853. They relate to the countries of Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and Sudan. Palmer studied the culture, languages and literature of Africa, thus becoming an outstanding Hausa and Arabic scholar and an acknowledged authority on the civilisation and literature of Hausa and Fulani.
